Research Director

Leo Lucassen (1959) is Research Director of the IISH and part time professor of Global Labour and Migration History at the Institute of History of Leiden University. He is also honorary adjunct-professor at the University of Aalborg (Denmark). He received his PhD (1990) cum Laude at Leiden University.

He is a former fellow of the New School for Social Research in New York and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS), member of the Academia Europaea, the Koninklijke Hollandsche  Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW) and since 2019 member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

He has received a NWO Pioneer grant (1998-2004) and specializes in global migration history, labour history, urban history, state formation, eugenics and other socio-political developments in modern states.
