Amber Zijlma has been working as a research assistant at the IISH since August 2023. She recently completed her Master’s degree in Global and Imperial History from the University of Oxford (UK). Her thesis focused on Chinese indentured labourers who worked in the Transvaal gold mines and the tobacco plantations in Sumatra. It analysed these contexts in comparative perspective, focusing on the uneasy presence these migrant labourers (actively) formed within the two empires, unsettling the relations between their respective industries, colonial governments and public.

She is part of the project Global Hub Labour Conflicts.
