Mathijs Boom

Postdoc researcher

Mathijs Boom is a post-doctoral researcher at the IISH, studying the history of the anti-nuclear movements of the 1970s and 1980s with an eye to their role in the thwarted 'transition' to nuclear energy.

He obtained his PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 2023 with a dissertation on early modern debates about Earth's deep past, as seen from the Dutch lowlands. Between 2019 and 2023 he developed and taught various courses on the history of environmentalism and on the history and philosophy of the climate and earth sciences at the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University.

His interests include intellectual history, the history of the climate and earth sciences, and environmental history. At the IISH, Boom aims to foreground the role of social movements in determining what energy sources we use and how we talk about them.
