Merel Blok

PhD researcher

Merel Blok is a PhD-researcher for the ERC-funded project SevenFrontiers - The Global South in the Age of Early Industrial Capitalism, supervised by prof. Ulbe Bosma and prof. Pepijn Brandon. Her sub-project examines the merchant houses trading in the seven commodities in question (sugar, cotton, coffee, precious metals, tea, opium and cereals) and analyses their roles in the development of commodity frontiers, their networks, and financing.

Previously she worked at the municipal archives of Schiedam, researching the city’s history, such as its economic ties to trans-Atlantic slavery, and editing an anniversary publication on its modern history. She has a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and sciences from University College Utrecht and a MPhil in economic and social history from the University of Cambridge.
