Andreas is a graduate of Addis Ababa University, the International Institute of Social Studies, and Leiden University. He was awarded a joint doctoral degree summa cum laude by the University of Basel and the University of Pavia, in African Studies and History, for a dissertation on the history of the Ethiopian labour movement. He has taught at Addis Ababa University and the Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Hargeisa, and has worked as research advisor at the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. He began working as the IISH's regional representative in Africa in 2013, and as the department for collection development’s regional specialist for Africa in 2020. As such, he coordinates the institute’s archival partnerships with African trade unions and labour organisations.
He is the author of the monograph The Ethiopian Labour Movement: Trade Unions, Collective Action and Contestation, 1960 – 2020, an associate editor of the Journal of Labor and Society, and member of the editorial board of Labor History.
