Olav Hofland

Visiting Fellow

Olav Hofland graduated from Leiden University in 2016 and has a special interest in the history of food in the USSR. His master thesis on the Soviet discourse on domestic cooking was awarded the IISH-Volkskrant prize in 2017. Currently, he is a PhD researcher at the European University Institute, where he is completing his doctoral thesis on the socialist foodservice industry (obshchestvennoe pitanie) in the USSR during the era of de-Stalinization (1953-1964).

As a visiting fellow at the IISH, Olav works on the culinary profession in the USSR. This research will result in a chapter in his dissertation and in a paper delivered at the Food, Rules, and the City conference that will take place in Brussels in November 2023.
