Brecht Nijman is a junior researcher for the GLOBALISE project at the Huygens Institute as well as an (external) PhD candidate at Radboud University Nijmegen.
In her PhD research she studies how pre-existing maritime networks in the greater Indian Ocean World adapted to European colonial expansion in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. She uses digital methods to process structured shipping records found in the recently digitized Copied Letters of the VOC to create a database on intra-Asian shipping.
Brecht has an MA in history from the University of Edinburgh and an MSc in applied data science from Utrecht University.
