Staff Member Collection Development

After finishing my Ph.D. at Leiden Institute of Area Studies, I joined the collection development department. With my training in environment studies and area studies, my dissertation discusses the intersection of material, metaphorical, and social discard; informal and stigmatized labor; and the development experiences of the urban underclass during South Korea’s authoritarian regime. Working for the IISH’s Asian collection, I am interested in people and practices that remain at the periphery of the state, particularly ones that are deemed marginal, deviant, or at times illicit—and archival materials that help unpack these.
