Marten Dondorp is a PhD student in Global History at Harvard University, specializing in the history of capitalism in the British and Dutch empires. His current research focuses on the intersections between piracy, state-building, logistics, and control of riverine ecologies in the Indian Ocean world. The project traces how colonial states and merchants developed increasingly securitized forms of conveying commodities over large distances in the early 19th century. Prior to starting this project, he worked as a tour guide in Amsterdam, where he also completed a Research Master in Global History at the Vrije Universiteit.
