Zhanna Popova (1989) is a social and labour historian. She studied history at Moscow State University (BA 2011), interdisciplinary social sciences at École normale supérieure in Paris (MA 2013), and social sciences at the University of Amsterdam (PhD 2019).
Her research has principally been focused on coerced labour and mobility, experiences of marginalized workers, and labour activism in Russia and Poland.
She is the author of Coerced Labour, Forced Displacement, and the Soviet Gulag, 1880s–1930s (Amsterdam University Press, 2024) and co-author of Women’s Labour Activism in Eastern Europe and Beyond: A New Transnational History (UCL Press, 2025). She has co-edited Through the Prism of Gender and Work: Women’s Labour Struggles in Central and Eastern Europe and Beyond, 19th and 20th Centuries (Brill, 2023). In addition to that, her academic work has been published in International Review of Social History, Gender & History, Journal of Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe and other outlets.
She is the co-chair of the Labour Network of the European Social Science History Conference.
