PhD at the University of Amsterdam in 1980. Taught at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, 1980-1996 (from 1990 as Professor of Comparative History).
Since 1996 Professor of Modern Asian History at the University of Amsterdam and senior research fellow at the International Institute of Social History.

The project Plants, People and Work: The Social History of Cash Crops in Asia, 18th to 20th Centuries started in 2007with a 500,000 euro grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (N.W.O.). It fits in the central 'Global Labour History' research program of the IISH.

When Peter Schumacher was still correspondent in Asia he visited Cambodia in 1973 and 1974 from Hong Kong where he was based. These visits resulted in stories on the war for the Dutch progressive weekly Vrij Nederland.
