Lucas Poy

Lucas Poy is a social and labour historian specialized in the history of the Second International and the early history of the labour movement in Argentina and Latin America. His research has a special focus on socialism in the so-called “Global South”, transnational connections, and the question of global solidarities.

He is Assistant Professor in Global Economic and Social History at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, as well as fellow of the Research Department of the International Institute of Social History, where he edits the Revista Latinoamericana de Trabajo y Trabajadores (REVLATT). He is also a fellow of the N.W. Posthumus Institute. Before joining VU Amsterdam, he was lecturer at the University of Buenos Aires and senior researcher of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) in Argentina. Between 2018 and 2023 he was coordinator of the International Association of Labour History Institutions.

Dr Poy has published in some of the most important journals of the field, such as the International Review of Social History, Labor History, Nuevo Mundo/Mundos Nuevos, Labor: Studies in Working-Class History, Cahiers Jaurès, European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Science & Society, Socialist History, Historical Materialism, and in different Latin American academic journals. He has also published three monographs about the history of the labour movement and the Socialist Party in Argentina. His current project explores the stances of socialist parties regarding the question of migration, on a global scale, in the period between 1870 and 1920.

He has received fellowships and grants from different scientific institutions and universities in Latin America, Spain, the Netherlands, and the United States. Dr Poy is part of the editorial team of several academic journals in the Americas and Europe, including the International Review of Social History, Journal of Labor and Society, and Archivos de historia del movimiento obrero y la izquierda, and participates regularly in the organisation of international events and workshops.
