“Women, Life, Freedom” and the revolutions of the 21st century
This year's Prince Dr Sabbar Farman-Farmaian Annual Lecture will be held by Asef Bayat, Professor of Sociology and Global and Transnational Studies, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Iran’s Women, Life, Freedom (WLF) movement holds its own particularities but has partly been shaped by the dynamics of the new generation of revolutionary uprisings.
What does the WLF tell us about the character of the revolutionary movements today? Particularly, how does it compare to the Arab spring uprisings that swept across the Middle East and North Africa in the past decade? Perhaps WLF represents the first 21st Century revolutionary movement that is struggling to save itself from its own inherent limitations. Will it succeed? That remains to be seen.
