Festival of the Uprising draws hundreds of participants
The Festival of the Uprising which was organized by the IISH on Saturday 13 October in the context of the Month of History, attracted more than 300 visitors. It was the first time that the institute organized a festival. But probably not the last time, said organizer and communication advisor Machteld Maris.
"It was a beautiful and inspiring afternoon. We were lucky to have such a great line-up, with speakers like Gustaaf Peek, Jean-Marc van Tol, Lilianne Ploumen, Milou Deelen and Mitchell Esajas. The music was great too. Our own Almudena Rubio for instance, who normally works in the archive, moved a whole crowd with wonderfully sung Spanish protest songs. People had tears in their eyes."
"Many visitors found the festival inspiring. There was a lot of historical material to be seen, but on the other side, uprising is a theme that is more current than ever, and that is something you notice about people," says Maris.
The day was closed by Clvstertrvck, a heavy band that usually produces high-volume rock music, but played acoustically for this occasion.
If it is up to communication advisor Maris, there will be another festival next year. "The theme of the Month of History will be 'he and she' then. We can do a lot with that as IISH."
