PhD researcher

Eva Seuntjens (1996) is a doctoral candidate at the KNAW and VU University of Amsterdam. She holds a bachelor's and master's degree in North American studies from Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. During this time she also studied abroad for a semester at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Eva recently graduated from her second MA in History: Politics, Culture and National Identities at Leiden University. Her thesis focuses on the representations of the Haitian Revolution and how these representations influenced the Dutch slavery debate between 1791 and 1833. While writing her thesis, she also completed an internship at the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies in Middelburg.

Her current project focuses on the role of the global Dutch involvement in slave trade and slavery. She looks at the slavery involvement of the Assurantie Compagnie 1771 in Amsterdam and its founders and aims to answer questions regarding what ways and to what extent the Assurantie Compagnie of 1771 was involved in the slave trade and slavery, and what the consequences of this involvement had for the Compagny, firm members and enslaved people. Her project is supervised by prof. dr. Pepijn Brandon and dr. Sabine Go.
