Describing data in a common language improves accessibility, interoperability, and reusability. Historical demographers have designed their own schemas and vocabularies to standardize historical data. CLAIR-HD gives an overview of these standardization tools, so that historical demographers can model their data using existing terminologies.

Schemas

Standardize all variables in a database to make information from different data sources comparable. There currently is no dominant schema in historical demography.

Standardize entries, group them, or assign status codes to historical phenomena. Occupational schemas are by far the most standardized.
