Elisabeth Heijmans

Post-Doc Researcher

Elisabeth Heijmans is a post-doctoral researcher in early modern French slavery in the Indian Ocean in the project Voices of Resistance: A Global Micro-Historical Approach to Enslavement coordinated by Matthias van Rossum. She obtained her PhD at Leiden University in 2018 on early modern French empire and overseas companies with a particular emphasis on the participation of private interests and trans-imperial connections. Her first post-doc at Leiden University focused on the governance of diversity and the practice of law in the Dutch empire. She then continued working on French early modern overseas expansion at the Center for Urban History in Antwerp where she worked on French merchants’ expectations of the future in overseas trade.
