Micaela Cabrita da Palma

Junior Researcher

Micaela Cabrita da Palma works as a junior researcher at the International Institute of Social History. She studies the colonial and slavery past of the Zaan region (Koloniale en Slavernijverleden van de Zaanstreek), focusing on local involvement in the slave trade and slavery, and the processing of colonial products in that region, such as chocolate, coffee and wood. This is a research project under the supervision of Ulbe Bosma and Matthias van Rossum.

Micaela holds a bachelor's degree in History and master's degree in Curating Art and History MA from VU University Amsterdam. Furthermore, she has worked for several research projects and exhibitions in which working with colonial archives and collections took a central position. Besides researching these collections, she has also been involved in digitising them and making them accessible.

Research interests:

  • Micro Dutch colonial histories, in both the Netherlands and West-Africa.
  • Museums and collecting practices, especially colonial collections and human/ancestral remains.
