Roeland Muskens

Fellow

Roeland Muskens is an independent journalist and researcher focusing on power, inequality, social movements, and corporate accountability. In 2013 he obtained his PhD at the University of Amsterdam with a dissertation on the Dutch anti-apartheid movement, published as Aan de goede kant – biografie van de Nederlandse anti-apartheidsbeweging 1960-1990

As a Visiting Fellow at the International Institute of Social History (IISG), he is working on a narrative non-fiction book about 125 years of resistance against Shell, provisionally titled Zand in de schelp (“Sand in the Shell”). Combining archival research, interviews, and international fieldwork, the project traces how activists, workers, journalists, shareholders, and local communities challenged one of the world’s most powerful oil companies.

His work moves at the intersection of journalism, history, and political research.

Outside his work he enjoys long-distance walking and chess.
