Award ceremony for the Volkskrant-IISG thesis prize

19 February 2026 - 17:00

Want to know more about Dutch policy on the recognition of genocide, malaria in the Middle Ages, or psychiatrist Coen van Emde Boas's views on homosexuality and transsexuality? Come to the presentation of the Volkskrant-IISG thesis prize!

The jury has selected three nominees. In alphabetical order:

  • Duco Dijkema investigates how Dutch policy on the recognition of genocide developed in the period after the Cold War. He uses the Kurdish genocide (al-Anfal) at the end of the 1980s and the genocide of the Yezidis by ISIS in 2014 as case studies.
  • Puck Rouffaer writes about the leading psychiatrist Coen van Emde Boas (1904-1981), a pioneer in the field of birth control and abortion, and a champion of gay and trans rights. Based on his life and work, Rouffaer analyses medical thinking and medical practice surrounding homosexuality and transsexuality.
  • Nina Witteman delves into the history of malaria in her thesis. She argues that this disease was not only recognised and treated as such in the Low Countries from the seventeenth century onwards, as historians often claim, but already in the Middle Ages.

Want to hear more about these topics?

During the award ceremony on 19 February, Volkskrant science editor Tonie Mudde will interview the three nominees and the candidates will give a pitch. Afterwards, there will be music and drinks. Everyone is welcome at this festive gathering!
