SevenFrontiers project presentations

26 February 2026 - 15:30

The SevenFrontiers project investigates the transformative impact of commodity frontiers in the Global South on labour, the environment and trade in the nineteenth century. These commodity frontiers, sites and processes of integration into the emerging global capitalist economy, fed the rise of early industrial capitalism in this period.

The SevenFrontiers team invites you to the presentations of the student assistants’ research projects on Thursday 26 February at the IISH. The student assistants Marit van der Bilt, Belén Garcia and Daan van der Mark will present the results of their work from the past year. They have examined a diverse range of topics – from intra-Asian trade patterns to the production of cotton and sugar in Egypt to local labour dynamics in the Mexican silver mining sector – through the lense of commodity frontier expansion between 1815 and 1870.

The event features:

Moving beyond Averages: Understanding Data Aggregation Risks in Major Asian Ports
Daan van der Mark

Cotton, sugar and female labour: State-Led Industrialisation under Egypt’s Pashas
Marit van der Bilt

Exploring Global History Through a Local Lens: Insights from a Silver Mining District in post-independence Mexico
