In De wereld aan het werk. Van de prehistorie tot nu benadrukt Jan Lucassen dat werken niet alleen noodzaak is voor het menselijk bestaan. Het bevredigt ook een natuurlijke behoefte aan zinvol sociaal bezig zijn en is de oudste manier om zelfwaardering en waardering van anderen te krijgen. Die stelling leidt dan tot de opvatting dat werk één, of zelfs de meest, basale vorm van zingeving is. Naar aanleiding van zijn boek kwam de vraag naar voren of deze conclusie in zijn wereldgeschiedenis van werk niet vooral geënt is op een burgerlijk begrip van de betekenis van werk voor de mens, toen en nu.
