The project's objective was to develop a database containing over 40.000 individual life courses of people born in the Netherlands in the period 1863-1922. The database with micro-data was supplemented with core data on the level of the municipalities.

The project built on work already carried out by the Historical Sample of the Population of the Netherlands and the Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) for the digitized census data.

The project ran from 2003 till 2009 and was financed by the fund for large investments of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO; file number 175-107.105.01) and matched by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

Since June 2004 Life Courses in Context maintained its own website, which was archived in 2016, for this archive see below.
