Matthias van Rossum receives a VIDI grant to research enslavement and resistance in the Dutch Empire

11 July 2022 - 15:39

With his proposal "Resisting Enslavement: A Global Historical Approach to Slavery in the Dutch Atlantic and Asian Empires (1620-1815)", Matthias van Rossum, senior researcher at the IISH, has earned a VIDI grant from the NWO Open Competition 2021!

His research will investigate how different conditions (such as war, debt or birth) in which persons were enslaved influenced their lives and how they resisted enslavement. The research will compare the impacts through personal stories in court cases from the entire early modern Dutch Empire, from the Indonesian archipelago, the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.
