Commodity Frontiers: Capitalist Transformations of the Global Countryside During the Past Six Centuries

01 April 2019 - 15:20

This large multi-year project aims to study the long history of commodity frontiers through an interdisciplinary research design that uses both written archival sources and fieldwork.

The project involves a global network of scholars and policy activists, and applies innovative approaches to data extraction, Semantic Web technology, and mapping and visualization techniques.

Linking relevant resources and developing new visualization techniques, the ambition is to describe, analyse and explain the proliferation of commodity frontiers and their contentious nature in the context of the global economy of the past 600 years.

A grant proposal is currently under review at the ERC Synergy competition.
