Last year Kees Mandemakers retired as senior research fellow at the International Institute of Social History and as Professor of History at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. |
During his professional life Kees has made a huge contribution to the broader fields of Historical Demography and Social and Economic History. In the 1980’s he launched the Historical Sample of the Netherlands and coordinated and extended it step by step throughout his career. As such, he is the founding father of one of the world’s richest longitudinal historical databases.
While Kees has always been devoted to bringing historical research on the Netherlands ahead, his aims and ambitions were much broader. He stimulated international comparative research by launching and coordinating the European Historical Population Samples Network. Moreover, he developed, together with George Alter and Myron Gutmann, the Intermediate Data Structure (IDS) and he played a key role in the creation of Historical Life CourseStudies.
However, over the years Kees was not only involved in database work and fostering international collaboration, he also conducted a lot of research, resulting in an outstanding publication record. All of this is reason enough to celebrate and honor Kees Mandemakers, by ways of a special issue in Historical Life Course Studies, in open access, compiled by three of the closest colleagues and friends of Kees: Jan Kok, Hilde Bras and Richard Zijdeman.
