Successful knowledge session on emigration with documentary Westlanders in Australia

28 April 2025 - 11:59

On Monday, April 14, a knowledge session on the impact of emigration was held at the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam, featuring the documentary Westlanders in Australia

The meeting was opened by Sofie de Baere (CGM) and the Australian ambassador Dr. Greg French. He emphasized the strong historical and cultural ties between the Netherlands and Australia and the importance of cultural organizations in both countries.

Professor Marlou Schrover (Leiden University) gave a presentation on the history of Dutch emigration to Australia. She discussed the important research conducted by senior researcher Dr. Marijke van Faassen using the emigration records of the Huygens Institute. This research sheds valuable light on the personal stories of migrants.

This was followed by the documentary Westlanders in Australia by filmmaker Heleen van Berkel, which showed how migration has affected the lives of three generations of the Looyen family. The film touches on heritage themes such as migration, entrepreneurship, maritime history, and digitization. It also explores the impact of emigration on their identity and their connection to their Dutch roots.

In the panel discussion that followed, expert Paul Rubens said that the story of the Looyen family in the film is recognizable to many migrants. The perspective of those left behind, shared by Lucienne Boonstra, also made a deep impression. Panel member Hélène Oppatja (CBG) pointed to the growing interest in family history and the accessibility of available sources.

The session ended with a heartfelt word of thanks from Sofie de Baere and an informal closing with an opportunity for further discussion. It was a valuable afternoon full of new insights, recognition, and connection.
