HSN datarelease UT.03 is the first public HSN datarelease and contains the outcomes of the HSN basic sample in the province of Utrecht for the period (of birth) of 1812-1922. On a limited scale two 'forerunners' have already been distributed.

Content of the HSN Database
The data of the HSN database can be divided into two categories:
- Data from events from the civil certificates
- Data with a more or less continuous character from the population registers
The backbone of the HSN database
The backbone or basis of the HSN database consists of life course data from a sample of about 85,000 persons, drawn from the birth certificates of the period 1812-1922. The life course data belonging to this ‘basic’ database is limited to two types of historical sources: the civil certificates and the population register (from 1850 onwards).

HSN Organisation
The HSN is located at the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam. It is part of the IISH research department. Decisions regarding projects are made by the Steering Group.
HSN History
The HSN started around 1987 with the formation of a work group whose members were from different social science disciplines like sociology, social-economic history, social geography, economics and demography, all sharing relatively strong historical interest.
HSN Goal
The Historical Sample of the Netherlands (HSN) strives to construct life histories as completely as possible for a representative portion of the nineteenth and twentieth century population in The Netherlands.
