Our lives would be unthinkable without the production of millions of tons of cotton, sugar, palm oil or soy. All these commodities are obtained at the lowest possible price with often destructive consequences for people and nature. The scale of the resulting environmental crises may be something of recent making, its mechanisms can be traced many centuries ago and are crucially part of the history of global capitalism.

Maandag 11 maart 2024 presenteert het Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis (IISG) het rapport Van slavernij tot liefdadigheid? Dit rapport onderzocht het aandeel van slavernij en kolonialisme in de totstandkoming van het kapitaal van de Insinger Stichting. Onderaan dit bericht kan het rapport worden gelezen. 

In het blad E-data & Research staan diverse artikelen over data en onderzoek in de alfa- en gammawetenschappen. Binnenkort valt het februari-nummer op de deurmat, deze editie is ook online beschikbaar via edata.nl.

With the generous support of Farman-Farmaian Family, the IISH launches a new fellowship programme named the Prince Dr Sabbar Farman-Farmaian Fellowships for scholars who wish to use its collections for the study of social and economic history of 18-20 century of Iran, whether from a regional, national, or comparative and transnational perspective.

Cruquiuseiland maakte de laatste jaren een transformatie door van industrieterrein naar (luxe) woonwijk. Dit heeft ook gevolgen voor de Openbare Werkplaats die daar al jaren zit, die een professionele werkruimte biedt aan meubelmakers, metaalbewerkers en kunstenaars. Anna Dabrowska, filmmaker en buurtbewoner, maakte hier een korte film over.

De Radboud Universiteit en het IISG stellen gezamenlijk de bijzondere leerstoel Global Histories of Labour and Colonialism in, die per 1 februari 2024 vervuld zal worden door Matthias van Rossum.

Op 9 januari 2024 bereikte ons het droevige bericht van het overlijden van Götz Langkau. Hoewel veel mensen wisten dat het de laatste jaren niet zo goed met hem ging, kwam het bericht toch als een schok.

Op 12 april 2024 organiseert het Centrum voor de Geschiedenis van Migranten (CGM) haar jaarlijkse studiedag in samenwerking met het Centrum voor Migratierecht in Nijmegen.
