PhD defense Meimei Wang: Institutional development and change in the management of the Grand Canal, 1700-1850

Meimei Wang (research assistant of Bas van Leeuwen) succesfully presented a case study on the institutions related to the management of the canal in Yangzhou during the period 1700–1850. The main question addressed by this thesis is why the institutions that managed the canal were initially successful but proved to be ineffective in the long term.

Potosí Global (Viajando con sus primeras imágenes, 1550-1650, La Paz: Plural) is a journey along the descriptions and depictions of Potosí and the connections entangled through them between Seville, Antwerp, Frankfurt and Constantinople.

NWO visitor travel grant for Denis Volkov

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) awarded the Visitor Travel Grant to the project presented by Prof. Touraj Atabaki. The Travel Grant enables Dr Denis Volkov (Russian National Research University Higher School of Economics) to join a new research project at the International Institute of Social History on the Soviet refugees across the southern borders of the Soviet Union during the interwar period (1918-1939).

Chinese ambassador visits IISH

On Monday September 9th, the Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands, H.E. Mr. XU Hong, and part of his staff, visited our institute. 

Leo Lucassen and Marien van der Heijden received the company. After an introduction about past, present and future of the institute, exchange of gifts, a cup of tea and an extensive tour followed. We showed them some unique documents from the Marx-Engels collection.

Our colleague, Spanish historian Almudena Rubio, located probably the largest known collection of Austrian born photographer Margaret Michaelis (1902-1985) which were unknown so far. The Spanish newspaper El Pais published out an interesting article about this extraordinary find (7-June- 2020).

NWO grant for Leo Lucassen en Manon van der Heijden

Prof. Manon van der Heijden (University of Leiden) & Prof. Leo Lucassen (IISH) learned last week that NWO decided to fund their project Tolerant migrant cities? The case of Holland 1600-1900 in the NWO Open Competition - SGW. Of the 41 grants, a total of 13 projects fall within the Humanities. Three projects went to the KNAW Humanities Cluster.
