On Monday September 9th, the Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands, H.E. Mr. XU Hong, and part of his staff, visited our institute.
Leo Lucassen and Marien van der Heijden received the company. After an introduction about past, present and future of the institute, exchange of gifts, a cup of tea and an extensive tour followed. We showed them some unique documents from the Marx-Engels collection.
Rossana Barragán (Bolivia) from the International Institute of Social History (the Netherlands) and Paula Zagalsky from CONICET (Argentina) organized this important Conference in the X International Congress of Bolivian Studies held in Sucre (22 to 24 July 2019).

Our colleague, Spanish historian Almudena Rubio, located probably the largest known collection of Austrian born photographer Margaret Michaelis (1902-1985) which were unknown so far. The Spanish newspaper El Pais published out an interesting article about this extraordinary find (7-June- 2020).
Prof. Manon van der Heijden (University of Leiden) & Prof. Leo Lucassen (IISH) learned last week that NWO decided to fund their project Tolerant migrant cities? The case of Holland 1600-1900 in the NWO Open Competition - SGW. Of the 41 grants, a total of 13 projects fall within the Humanities. Three projects went to the KNAW Humanities Cluster.
Het policy-journal Beleid in Maatschappij publiceerde een dossier over slavermij en maatschappij. Het nummer werd samengesteld door dr. Karin Lurvink en IISG PhD-onderzoeker Drs. Tamira Combrink. Het dossier bevat ook een bijdrage van IISG-senior onderzoeker Pepijn Brandon.
Op 26 juni presenteerden IISG, de Vrije Universiteit en de Universiteit Leiden de uitkomsten van een meerjarig wetenschappelijk onderzoek dat deze vraag beantwoordt.

Lodewijk de Waal (Rotterdam 1950) was chairman of the trade union FNV from 1997 to 2005.
Journalist Leonard Ornstein (VPRO) and IISH researcher Dennie Oude Nijhuis spoke with him about his time as leader of the FNV. Of course about his vision of the movement in that period. But they also asked him about more recent developments. Once again, this yielded wonderful material is included in the IISH collection and made available to researchers and anyone interested via the website. Interviews are in Dutch.
Every year around this time, Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) publishes the number of strikes of the year before. 'In 2018, 28 times, in 2017 it was 32 times. There were about 67 thousand days of work lost less than a year earlier.' So we can read on the website of the institute.The number of strikes fell, while the number of strikers and suspended days was lower.
The IISH has an overview of the strikes that have taken place since 1372 Also for 2018, this unique historical series has been updated by IISH researcher Sjaak van der Velden. He promoted on the development of strikes in the Netherlands.
