PhD research on Assurance Company of 1771 and slavery

In early April, the International Institute of Social History (IISH) launched a doctoral research project on the slavery connections of the Assurance Company of 1771. The research is funded by Nationale Nederlanden (NN). Nationale Nederlanden has no influence on the research.

In June 2022, the Royal Dutch Centre for Caribbean and Asian Studies (KITLV), the National Institute for Dutch Slavery Past and Heritage (NiNsee), the International Institute of Social History (IISH) and the University of Curaçao started a research project into the Dutch colonial slavery past and its effects.

Opname 'Het uiteenvallen van de Sovjet-Unie' nu te zien

Gijs Kessler, senior onderzoeker bij het IISG en lang gestationeerd in Moskou, maakte de veranderingen in Rusland na het uiteenvallen van de Sovjet-Unie van nabij mee. Hij schreef daar dit jaar een boek over - Rusland – land dat anders wil zijn. Op donderdag 20 oktober voerde hij in een stampvol IISG een gesprek met vijf ooggetuigen van de gebeurtenissen van 1991 en daaropvolgende jaren.

Matthias van Rossum receives a VIDI grant to research enslavement and resistance in the Dutch Empire

With his proposal "Resisting Enslavement: A Global Historical Approach to Slavery in the Dutch Atlantic and Asian Empires (1620-1815)", Matthias van Rossum, senior researcher at the IISH, has earned a VIDI grant from the NWO Open Competition 2021!

In Memoriam Benjamin Mouwes

Met veel verdriet nemen we afscheid van onze zeer gewaardeerde en geliefde collega Benjamin Mouwes, die afgelopen zondag, 26 juni, overleed. Ben was medewerker van de afdeling Data & Verrijking, in het team dat voor de Historische Steekproef Nederland (HSN) data verzamelt. Na zijn pensioen in 2013 bleef hij aan als vrijwilliger bij de HSN.

The official presentation of the new book 'Rusland - land dat anders wil zijn' (Russia - Country that wants to be different) was held on June 9th at the publisher, Uitgeverij Prometheus. The book is a personal retrospective on 25 years of living and working in Russia by Gijs Kessler, senior researcher at the Institute.

Research IISH shows large scale involvement in slavery predecessors ABN AMRO

Today, the research report The slavery history of historical predecessors of ABN AMRO. An investigation into Hope & Co. and R. Mees & Zoonen was published. Authors of the report are Dr. Pepijn Brandon and Dr. Gerhard de Kok. It is the result of historical research commissioned by ABN AMRO and conducted by the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam.
