Gijs Kessler, senior onderzoeker bij het IISG en lang gestationeerd in Moskou, maakte de veranderingen in Rusland na het uiteenvallen van de Sovjet-Unie van nabij mee. Hij schreef daar dit jaar een boek over - Rusland – land dat anders wil zijn. Op donderdag 20 oktober voerde hij in een stampvol IISG een gesprek met vijf ooggetuigen van de gebeurtenissen van 1991 en daaropvolgende jaren.

Together with Sound & Vision and Het Nieuwe Instituut, the International Institute of Social History is organising the third edition of Open Archive, in which four makers search open digital heritage collections for new stories, with new media works as the end result.

IISH Research Paper 55 – now online

Leo Lucassen wrote a new research paper on ‘replacement’ thinking in the Atlantic world since the early nineteenth century: Roots of a Murderous Idea: ‘Replacement’ Thinking in the Atlantic World Since the Early 19th Century.

With his proposal "Resisting Enslavement: A Global Historical Approach to Slavery in the Dutch Atlantic and Asian Empires (1620-1815)", Matthias van Rossum, senior researcher at the IISH, has earned a VIDI grant from the NWO Open Competition 2021! 

Met veel verdriet nemen we afscheid van onze zeer gewaardeerde en geliefde collega Benjamin Mouwes, die afgelopen zondag, 26 juni, overleed. Ben was medewerker van de afdeling Data & Verrijking, in het team dat voor de Historische Steekproef Nederland (HSN) data verzamelt. Na zijn pensioen in 2013 bleef hij aan als vrijwilliger bij de HSN.

The official presentation of the new book 'Rusland - land dat anders wil zijn' (Russia - Country that wants to be different) was held on June 9th at the publisher, Uitgeverij Prometheus. The book is a personal retrospective on 25 years of living and working in Russia by Gijs Kessler, senior researcher at the Institute. 

Vandaag verschijnt bij uitgeverij Prometheus het boek Rusland - land dat anders wil zijn van onze senior onderzoeker Gijs Kessler. Het boek is een persoonlijke terugblik op de vijfentwintig jaar moderne Russische geschiedenis die hij van zeer nabij meemaakte. Hij bezocht het land voor het eerst in 1991 en woonde en werkte van 2002 tot 2016 in Moskou.

Today, the research report The slavery history of historical predecessors of ABN AMRO. An investigation into Hope & Co. and R. Mees & Zoonen was published. Authors of the report are Dr. Pepijn Brandon and Dr. Gerhard de Kok. It is the result of historical research commissioned by ABN AMRO and conducted by the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam.

Great news! Dr. Peyman Jafari, affiliated with the International Institute of Social history and Princeton University, has been awarded a VENI grant of 280.000 euro by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) for his project Oil Frontiers in the British and Dutch Empires: Land, Labour and Environment in the Making of an Imperial Oil Regime, 1890-1940.

Via an open call, artists Alice Wong & Simo Tse, Remco Torenbosch and Daria Kiseleva have been selected for the Open Archive 3.0 project. Open Archive focuses on the creative reuse of archival materials. The participants will use the open digital collections of Het Nieuwe Instituut, Sound and Vision and the International Institute of Social History to create a new media work in which artistic research and the creative process are central.

HSN-vrijwilliger Ben Mouwes heeft zondag 27 maart de Andreaspenning ontvangen uit handen van Micha Mos, lid van het dagelijks bestuur van het stadsdeel Centrum. Hij ontving de onderscheiding voor zijn grote inzet voor de speeltuinvereniging De Waag, die 100 jaar bestaat. De Andreaspenning wordt toegekend aan personen die grote prestaties hebben verricht op sociaal, cultureel, maatschappelijk of economisch gebied voor Amsterdam, en aan personen die zich minimaal tien jaar als vrijwilliger voor een maatschappelijk doel hebben ingezet.

With the generous support of the Farman-Farmaian Family, the IISH launches a new edition of the fellowship programme named the Prince Dr Sabbar Farman-Farmaian Fellowships for scholars who wish to use its collections for the study of social and economic history of 18th - 20th century Iran, whether from a regional, national, or comparative and transnational perspective.
